About Athenian Ice Cream

A family owned ice cream distributor for over 40 years.

George & Rose Homenides founded Athenian Ice Cream in the early 1960’s. Upon arriving in the United States, George did not speak English; so he took on odd jobs, while George spent the evenings learning English and earning his High School equivalency diploma.

George’s first job was at Bungalow Bar, an ice cream distributor, where he worked alongside other Greek immigrants and learned about the food service industry. He eventually became involved and was instrumental in forming a union for boxmen in the ice cream industry.

George Homenides founded Athenian Ice Cream in the early 1960’s. Upon arriving in the United States, he and his wife did not speak English; to get by they took on odd jobs, while George spent the evenings learning English and earning his High School equivalency diploma.

George’s first job was at Bungalow Bar, an ice cream distributor, where he worked alongside other Greek immigrants and learned about the food service industry. He eventually became involved with Boxman Ice Cream Distribution and started a union for workers.

Through his personality and exceptional service, George significantly built his business.

Eventually George decided it was time to venture out and create his own ice cream distribution company, Athenian Ice Cream. He started out with a Volkswagen van, a cardboard box, and dry ice. Traveling around Brooklyn and Queens, he built up his business one client at a time.

Since its opening, Athenian Ice Cream has grown immensely, distributing ice cream bulk, novelties, ice cream cakes, gelato, and other frozen treats. For decades it has proudly served restaurants, diners, schools, and more throughout Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, and Long Island.

Today, Athenian Ice Cream is run by George’s son, Chris. He continues to follow his dad’s work ethic and relationship building with new and old clients.

George’s motto has always been, “Do the right thing!”
